Environmental savings
Adrian Jones, managing director, MOL (Europe)
What happens to my cargo if it gets lost or damaged?
The liabilities of the shipping line are set out in the terms and conditions of carriage on the back
of the Bill of Lading. Where loss or damage is caused by the shipping line, compensation based
on the purchase value of the affected goods would normally be due to the shipper. Where damage
is caused by incorrect stowage in the container the shipper or its agent would normally be liable.
For complete peace of mind, we always recommend the exporter takes out insurance.
How can we reduce the impact of southern congestion?
MOL offers a number of services on ‘feeder’ vessels operating out of smaller ports around the UK
and Ireland. These connect with the main vessel in North Continental ports and can be much more
time and cost effective than shipping via the main southern UK ports. Popular feeder ports include
Grangemouth, South Shields and Immingham.
How can I control the fluctuation of interest rate changes on my business?
MOL quotes freight rates in US dollars, usually excluding Currency Adjustment Factor (CAF) and
Bunker Adjustment Factor (BAF) which are required to help manage the risks of major exchange
rate changes or movements in the cost of fuel. However, the company can invoice in GBP, Euros
or US dollars.
Do I have to complete lots of documentation and is there the facility to do this ‘on-line’?
Shipping lines obviously require clear instructions on where cargo is to travel, plus cargo and
contact details. With these instructions, MOL produces all necessary documentation, including
customs declaration if required. Shipping instructions can be supplied by fax or email. MOL also
offers on-line options, including direct links to the company’s in-house system or indirect links
via industry portals such as GT Nexus and Inttra.
How do I know where my goods are in the supply chain?
On-line tracking is available through MOL’s website. The planned cargo routing is also confirmed
on the Bill of Lading and updates on progress can be obtained from MOL at any time. When the
cargo arrives at the destination port, the local office contacts the consignee to confirm arrival and
organise delivery.
By making environmental changes within my business is it still possible to make money?
MOL has been at the forefront of using feeders from local ports to reduce road haulage miles,
congestion and associated pollution. Further reduction in environmental impact can be achieved
through smart planning of haulage activities to minimise dead legs. Where customers help
(working around proposed pickup times for example) MOL can pass on some of the cost savings,
so it is possible to increase profitability while being environmentally friendly. www.mol.co.jp
